New Mardi Gras (NMG), Australian Marriage Equality (AME) and
Taronga Zoo announce the inaugural Mardi Gras Dinner at the Zoo,
a gala dinner at Taronga Zoo to raise money for the fight for
marriage equality and a highlight of the 2010 Sydney Gay and
Lesbian Mardi Gras.
From 6pm on
3 March 2010 guests will enjoy exclusive after-hours access to
the Zoo, have a private viewing of the famous bird show, meet
some of the Zoo's most exotic residents and learn about the
animals and their homosexual activities, same-sex couplings and
parenting skills.
This will be
followed by a stunning dining experience at the Zoo's
Harbourview Ballroom, enjoying one of the best views in the
city.
NMG has
added this event at one of Sydney's major tourist icons to
attract both the local LGBTIQ community as well as interstate
and international guests visiting for Mardi Gras. The event also
illustrates NMG's continuing focus on working with community
organisations such as AME.
"We are
delighted to back this event which we believe will be popular
with locals and visitors alike", said NMG CEO Anna McInerney.
"Many people have told us they would like a major dining
experience as part of the Mardi Gras programme. This event will
deliver not only that but also a boost to the marriage equality
cause."
Proceeds
from the dinner will go to funding further work by AME. Alex
Greenwich, AME spokesperson, welcomed NMG's support.
"The money
raised will be used to provide the key missing piece in the
lobbying effort," said Alex Greenwich.
"We will
create a public education document which states clearly and
simply all the arguments for marriage equality and refutes the
main arguments against. It will focus on the lived experiences
of couples and families and draw on submissions to the recent
Senate inquiry."
"This
document will then be sent to members of Federal Parliament to
educate them on same-sex marriage."
The event
will cost $230 to $250 per person, the same price as a dinner
out in any of Sydney's top restaurants, and includes all
beverages, transport, entertainment and the opportunity to
support the biggest civil rights battle faced by the LGBTIQ
community in one of Sydney's most spectacular settings.
The dinner
is also seen as a unique opportunity for corporate hospitality
by businesses with gay and lesbian clients.
