The Australian
Democrats have been longstanding supporters of the
gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community since their
inception in 1977.
All Democrat senators opposed the Howard
Government's 2004 same-sex marriage ban with their leader giving an impassioned speech
against the bill in parliament.
In June 2006, the
Democrats introduced the
Same-Sex
Marriages Bill to extend the right to marry to
same-sex couples.
