AUSTRALIAN LABOR PARTY Leader: Kevin Rudd (Prime Minister) |
The
Australian Labor Party (ALP) is opposed to equal legal
rights for same-sex
couples.
Labor supports
marriage under Australian law
as being exclusively a union between a
man and a
woman and refuses to recognise same-sex marriages
entered into overseas
by either Australians or even
the nationals of those countries concerned.
Prior to the
election of the Rudd Government on 24 November 2007,
the ALP
committed to removing financial
discrimination faced by same-sex couples in 58
pieces
of legislation identified in a recent report
by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission.
Labor also committed to
establishing state-based relationship registers provided they
do not
resemble marriage.
