In just a few days the Labor Party National Conference will debate marriage equality. This is a historic opportunity for the Labor Party to endorse equality for all Australians. It is vital we show the Labor Party that we support equality.
"Same sex couples feel the same level of love and commitment essential for a marriage as opposite sex couples and I believe they should be allowed the freedom to marry if they choose. There are no logical reasons to deny same-sex couples the right to marry. The personal moral disapproval that individuals may feel towards marriage equality is not reason enough to allow this discrimination to continue.."
Lara Giddings, Labor Premier of Tasmania
"People should be allowed to do what they like on this issue. If people love each other and they build lives together and they want that recognised, I think that's perfectly reasonable. Marriage equality is an issue of basic human rights and fairness."
Anna Bligh, Labor Premier of Queensland
"A change to the Marriage Act would mark an important extension of Labor's tradition of equal treatment regardless of sexual preference. It would also assure those with a religious conscience about the issue that their church or religious organisation would be permitted to continue to practise its traditional view of marriage - thereby overcoming the argument for a ''conscience vote'' on the matter."
Mark Butler, Federal Minister for Mental Health and Ageing
"Labor and Liberal make the argument that the family is the basic building block of society. We all know that married families have a whole range of benefits – they live longer, they make more money. A whole bunch of studies back that up. Then why, why, why, don’t we grant all families the right to be married?"
Kristina Kenneally, former Labor Premier of NSW
"Full recognition of gay people’s marriage rights will really establish the depth of Labor’s commitment to the principle of people’s entitlement to be different but still fully valued law-abiding members of our society."
Bill Hayden, former federal Labor leader and Governor-General
"Like many, my belief in equality led me to join the ALP. It is this belief that drives my advocacy for equality in relation to marriage for same-sex couples, and for a change to the party platform at next month's national conference. Equality should not be a matter of conscience; it should be reflected in Labor policy."
Senator Penny Wong, Federal Finance Minister
