Australian Marriage Equality

LIBERAL PARTY OF AUSTRALIA
Leader: Tony Abbott
(Leader of the Opposition)

The Liberal/National Coalition lost government on 24 November 2007.

Under former Prime Minister, John Howard, the Liberals were responsible for amending the Marriage Act in 2004 to define legal marriage as being exclusively between a man and a woman. Valid marriages entered into by same-sex couples overseas are also, as a result, not recognised in Australia.

The current Liberal leader, Tony Abbott, opposes equal marriage.
