LIBERAL PARTY OF AUSTRALIA Leader: Brendan Nelson (Leader of the Opposition) |
The Liberal/National
Coalition lost government on 24 November 2007.
Under former Prime Minister, John Howard,
the Liberals were responsible for
amending the
Marriage Act in 2004 to define legal marriage as
being exclusively
between a man and a woman. Valid
marriages entered into by same-sex couples
overseas
are also, as a result, not recognised in Australia.
The new
Liberal leader, Dr Nelson, has expressed support for financial
equality for gays and lesbians, but continues to oppose equal
marriage rights, IVF access or adoption rights for gay, lesbian,
bisexual and transgender Australians.
