The inquiry which was
announced late last year by
the Federal
Attorney-General’s office is
being overseen by the Human
Rights Consultation
Committee.
Australians for Marriage
Equality (AME) says same-sex
marriage is a matter of
fundamental human rights.
AME spokesperson, Alex
Greenwich, is
"calling
on community members to
write to the inquiry
supporting full legal
equality for same-sex
partners".
"[The]
laws preventing same-sex
marriage violate the right
to equality before the law,
the right not to be
discriminated against and
the right to marriage and
family life,"
he said.
"Human
rights charters in other
countries have been
important for achieving
equality in marriage and AME
strongly supports an
Australian human rights
charter."
AME has developed a toolkit
to help community members
show their support for full
legal equality.
The kit advises people on
how to make a personal
submission to the national
inquiry into human rights.
The information on their
website states:
'In
your submission please
include your personal story
about how the failure of the
Australian Government to
allow same-sex marriage
directly affects you, your
family and friends … The
strongest submissions will
be those that draw on
personal experience. As far
as possible, include
the stories of real people.'
