Australia's marriage
equality advocates
have welcomed a
court decision
allowing same-sex
marriage in the US
state of
Connecticut.
Australian Marriage
Equality
spokesperson, Peter
Furness, said three
US states
and six other
nations now permit
same-sex couples to
marry, leaving
Australia further
behind than ever.
"What is
particularly
important about the
Connecticut decision
is that civil unions
were rejected as an
unequal, unfair
and second-best
alternative to full
marriage", Mr
Furness said.
"The decision
confirms our view
that civil unions
are no substitute
for full marriage
equality."
On 4
November Californians
will vote on whether
to respect or
nullify the
thousands of
same-sex marriages
which have occurred
since that state
granted full
equality in May.
