Residents of the Australian Capital Territory have started a petition calling on Senator Gary Humphries to support marriage equality.

The Senator opposes marriage equality despite polling showing that support for the reform in the territory is as high as 73 percent.

In a letter to residents, Senator Humphries argued that marriage cannot be changed because “the church maintains a measure of ownership” over the institution.
